Cut Outs

Henri Matisse at the Tate.

An exhibiton many have been eagerly anticipating is 'The Cut Outs' by Henri Matisse. An exhibiton of works produced during his later years, when his health issues and limited mobility began to form a barrier between himself and his paintings. Paper Cut outs is an incredibe visual display of Matisse's new method of creating.

It is no longer the brush that slips and slides over the canvas, it is the scissors that cut into the paper and into the colour...The Contour of the figure springs from the discovery of the scissors that give it the movement of circulating life.
— Henri Matisse

The colourful palette prevalent throughout the exhibition, a typical trademark of Matisse, evokes happiness from its lighthearted style. Shapes delicately arranged, rashly cut with precision from supersized pieces of paper only to be attatched with semi permanent fixtures such as tape, and pins contributed to the overall playful nature of the exhibit.

'The Cut- Outs' exhibiton runs at the Tate Modern until 7th September 2014, it is a MUST see. I do advise however to avoid weekends/ bank holidays as the influx of tourists and day trippers deter somewhat from the experience.
